Sometimes the best meals come from the simplest ingredients. In this post I’m sharing 3 easy sandwich ideas made with hot dog buns — perfect for a quick lunch, a light dinner, or even meal prep for the week. I filmed the whole process in a video, so if you prefer to follow along visually, definitely check that out too.
These sandwiches are all about using what you already have in the fridge and turning it into something delicious in just a few minutes. Let’s get into it!
Why Use Hot Dog Buns for Sandwiches?
Hot dog buns are soft, a little sweet, and easy to fill — they hold ingredients well without falling apart, which makes them perfect for these kinds of quick, casual sandwiches. Plus, if you already have a pack of hot dog buns at home, these recipes are a great way to use them for something other than, well, hot dogs.

1. Tamago Sando-Inspired Egg Salad Sandwich
This first sandwich is inspired by the Japanese tamago sando, a soft, creamy egg salad sandwich that’s a staple in Japanese convenience stores.
Ingredients
- 2 boiled eggs
- Mayonnaise, to taste
- A pinch of hondashi (dashi powder)
- Hot dog buns
How to make it:
- Boil the eggs, peel them, and mash them in a bowl.
- Add mayonnaise and a pinch of hondashi to the mashed eggs.
- Mix everything together until creamy and well combined.
- Spread the egg mixture generously inside a hot dog bun.
The hondashi is the secret here — it adds a subtle umami flavor that makes this simple egg salad taste a lot closer to the real tamago sando.

2. Egg, Tomato & Cheese (or Chives) Sandwich
The second sandwich idea uses fried egg instead of boiled egg, paired with fresh tomato and your choice of topping.
Ingredients
- Tomato slices
- Mayonnaise, to taste
- Fried eggs, cut into strips
- Chives (for one version)
- Cheese (for the other version)
- Hot dog buns
How to make it:
- Spread mayonnaise inside the hot dog bun.
- Add a few slices of tomato.
- Fry the eggs, then cut them into strips and layer them on top of the tomato.
- For one sandwich, sprinkle fresh chives on top.
- For the other, add a slice of cheese and pop it in the air fryer for a few minutes until the cheese melts.
This one is great if you want two different flavors from the same base — fresh and herby with the chives, or warm and melty with the cheese.

3. Tuna, Turkey & Arugula Sandwich
The last sandwich is the heartiest of the three, combining a seasoned tuna mix with turkey and arugula for extra freshness.
Ingredients
- 1 can of tuna chunks
- About 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise
- A little hondashi
- Salt, to taste
- Cherry tomatoes
- Arugula
- Sliced turkey
- Hot dog buns
How to make it:
- Drain the canned tuna and add it to a bowl.
- Add about 3 tablespoons of mayonnaise and a little hondashi.
- Mix everything well, then taste and add more salt if needed.
- Cut the hot dog bun open and spread a little mayonnaise inside.
- Layer in the arugula, sliced turkey, and cherry tomatoes (cut in half).
- Top it off with the seasoned tuna mix and close the sandwich.
The hondashi in the tuna mix does the same job it did in the egg salad — it rounds out the flavor and adds a savory depth you don’t get from mayonnaise alone.
Tips for Making These Sandwiches
- Prep the fillings ahead of time: the egg salad and tuna mix both keep well in the fridge for a day or two, so you can prep them in advance and just assemble the sandwiches when you’re ready to eat.
- Toast the buns first: if you like a bit of crunch, lightly toast the hot dog buns before filling them.
- Adjust the hondashi: hondashi is salty and concentrated, so start with a small pinch and add more to taste rather than adding it all at once.
- Use the air fryer for melty cheese: a few minutes in the air fryer is all it takes to melt the cheese without drying out the bread.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is hondashi and can I substitute it?
Hondashi is a Japanese instant dashi (soup stock) powder made mostly from bonito fish. It adds a savory, umami flavor. If you don’t have it, you can leave it out or use a small pinch of fish sauce or a light seasoning of your choice instead.
Can I use regular bread instead of hot dog buns?
Yes! These fillings work well in regular sandwich bread, a baguette, or even a wrap if you don’t have hot dog buns on hand.
How long do the sandwich fillings last in the fridge?
Both the egg salad and the tuna mix can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days.
Pairs Well With Homemade Yogurt
If you’re putting together a full spread, these sandwiches pair really nicely with something fresh and creamy on the side, like my homemade yogurt recipe. A cup of homemade yogurt with a bit of honey is a light, refreshing way to round out a lunch built around these sandwiches, especially the tuna one.
